5 career New Year's resolutions for 2018
2019 is coming to a close, a new chapter is about to begin and you know what this means... New Year’s resolutions! No matter what goals you pick, it is essential to ensure that they’re ones you will stick to.
To help kick start your career in the right direction for 2020, here are 5 career New Year’s resolutions you can actually commit to:
1. Clean your workspace:
Before you start on any other New Year’s resolutions, make it your goal to have a clear out. No one can get anything done with a messy workspace.
Whether it means getting rid of that stack of paper that has been sat on your desk for a few months or deleting and reorganising your files on your computer – having a clean workspace will do wonders for your attitude and motivation at work.
You know what they say... clean space, clear mind.
2. Be more active at work:
We all can agree that ‘getting fit’ may be one of the worst kept resolutions of all time. However, there is a way to make it into something you can achieve and stick to over the course of the year.
Simply, make it your goal to include some sort of exercise into your working day. Whether it be taking regular strolls around the office, cycling to work or taking the dreaded stairs to the 4th floor instead of the lift, you’ll not only be improving your overall posture, health and fitness – you’ll also be keeping up a better workplace wellbeing.
3. Improve your work-life balance:
If you spent last year doing too much overtime, checking your work emails after hours or insisting ‘you don’t need a break’ – developing a better balance between your career and your personal life could be more of a necessity, rather than a choice.
You may feel like overworking yourself is a good way to progress in your career, it may well be reducing your productivity. Make 2020 the year you learn to say no.
Simple adjustments to your workload can make a big difference in your approach and overall happiness at work.
4. Work your way up:
Do you believe it’s your time for a promotion? Are you in need of a pay rise? Or are you looking for a new job? Make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to fulfil at least one of these career goals.
For instance, if your main goal is to find a new role in 2020, what you really need to consider is how you can achieve it. This could be done by working on your job search techniques, updating your CV or spending more time on perfecting your interview skills.
5. Don’t put things off:
I bet you have almost run out of excuses for not starting to look for your dream job. We understand it can be all too easy to put it off but no matter what your reasons are, what better time to turn it around than in the New Year?
With a clear focus of what you want from your dream job, 2020 could be the year you find a job you actually enjoy and excel in; not a job that just pays the bills. Trust us, it is possible.
Career improvement is a year-round process, but why not let the momentum of January help kick start your success?
